Are you suffering from insomnia?
Insomnia is one of the most common complaints I hear, especially from women in their menopausal and perimenopausal years. But it can happen at any time to anyone man or woman, young or old for many reasons.
It is a frustrating experience for everyone that has it! I know because I have suffered from it periodically throughout my life.
What do I do to help myself?
I of course take my herbal formula for sleep and make sure that I have herbal support for any constitutional imbalances that may bother me. I try to do relaxing and non stimulating things before bedtime, which includes not watching the evening news or working at my computer.
However, I want to tell you about a new study that I just read about showing that the blue light spectrum present in sunlight may be the key.
Here’s how it works.
The hormone melatonin that our body produces, gives our body the signal to sleep. However, we don’t want a steady diet of melatonin production. We need to have a change in melatonin levels in order for it to give the body the message to sleep. During the day when (and if!) we get enough sunlight and blue light, it suppresses the melatonin giving us energy for the day. When the sun goes down and the light is low, we produce melatonin, get sleepy and have a restful sleep. It is the change in melatonin level that is important.
The other key is to limit your time in front of the computer and TV at night, because they both emit blue light and suppress your melatonin production.
I will be very interested to know if any of you try this and how it works for you. Please comment below or on my Facebook page and let me know of your experience and hopefully your successful sleeping.
