Is suffering with PMS and menstrual discomfort all just part of being a woman?
Should we just accept it as the natural course of our lives until the inevitable day that we enter menopause?
I don’t think so.
Most women if they don’t suffer every month with PMS or menstrual cramps, have at least had the occasional period with discomfort. If you are one of the women who suffer with extremes of PMS and or cramps you don’t have to wait until menopause for relief.
Studies have shown that acupuncture can not only help alleviate the symptoms of PMS, but with regular treatment can help to minimize menstrual cramping.
Why does PMS happen?
It is a warning sign that your hormones are out of balance. Many factors contribute to out of balance hormones including: stress, sleep, diet, lifestyle.
Just how out of balance are your hormones?
If you would like to know how out of balance your hormones are, make a list of your symptoms. This could include irritability, anger, bloating, food cravings, breast tenderness, headaches, depression.
The more of the above you experience the more out of balance you may be.
What about menstrual cramps, what causes this?
Depending on the severity cramps can be caused by many things that I will cover in another newsletter. For the most part for mild to moderate cramping it is caused by the release of prostaglandins which help to
promote the sloughing off of the uterine lining. Too much of this hormone-like substance can cause excessive cramping during the menses.
Hormonal imbalance is also a cause of the bloating type of cramping that can precede your period by 2 weeks and last though your menses.
By helping balance hormones with acupuncture, herbs, supplements and dietary and lifestyle guidance, we can help to stop the cycle of menstrual discomfort and PMS. In addition acupuncture helps to release your body’s natural painkillers, endorphins. This can help to alleviate the cramping caused by an overproduction of prostaglandins.
Over time acupuncture has proven to reduce and eliminate these symptoms so that you can no longer dread your monthly cycle. Seriously, you do not have to wait until menopause for relief.
